Leadership Development - Leader as Coach

Leaders who develop coaching skills are more likely to foster an environment where their people feel valued, are given opportunities to learn and grow and are willing to challenge themselves to support their own success and that of their organisation.

As experienced coaches and trainers we are able to offer, in association with Point Ahead (www.pointahead.com.au) a proven leadership training program that is designed to promote greater behavioural choice, invigorate leadership practices and maximise the application of coaching skills back into the workplace.
Leader as Coach has been delivered to a number of organisations since the first program in 2007 with in excess of 100 managers and team leaders passing successfully through the program. The program has also been in place since 2007 with a leading Australian financial institution which has demonstrated a return on investment in excess of 700 per cent and was also nominated for the highly regarded Prism award issued by the International Coach Federation.

In our experience, learning to coach is similar to learning a language in that it takes time to understand, apply and successfully embed the learnings. Built on a sound theoretical base the Leader as Coach program has been designed to do this as well as fit the adult learning process of real time learning. There is also a strong emphasis with Leader as Coach to facilitate the means by which its success in the workplace can be measured in terms of both a return on investment (ROI) and an improvement on relationship (IOR).

Some key features of the program which support its effectiveness include:

  • Embedding coaching skills: the strength of the Leader as Coach program is in providing 44 hours of coach training over a 35 week period via tele-conferencing which enables participants to learn, develop and apply coaching skills in the workplace. This comprises fourteen (14) modules containing the fundamental skills of coaching as well as syndicate coaching sessions where participants coach their peers under supervision using the GROW model.

  • Alignment to nationally recognised competency statements: successful completion of this program provides participants with the opportunity to obtain a Statement of Attainment towards three (3) units of competency contained within Certificate IV in Workplace and Business Coaching.

  • Measuring return on investment: a key feature of the Leader as Coach program is the ability to measure a return on investment and this is something that is established with clients at the outset of any program.

"The Leader as Coach program has proven to be the most effective employee development program I have witnessed to date. A conservative calculation of net benefit represents approximately $30,000 per person, per annum." Helen Thompson, Head of Customer Experience, Academy Operations, National Australia Bank
